besides, the convention isn't *entirely* novel:

in computing, bytes are B, bits are b.
chemistry: m vs M (molal vs molar concentration)
math: p vs P (probability value vs measure)

I'm just saying if we're making it all up, you can't pretend like lower casing is some kind of well-known convention for currency subunits, when it really isn't. I get the rationalle of it, but it's not convincing. A b will cause more confusion, because it's unclear what it stands for? "Bits"? "Bat...
