I went a couple weeks before realizing "silent" and "vibrate" are two different modes. But I had the same experience. I think another problem is that I have trained myself to ignore all vibrations while sitting at my desk because the urgent ones (i.e. wife messages) popped up on my Mac. I also bumped up the time that notifications show on my Pebble to like 5 minutes and that helped as well.
