Lucy the Elephant, Margate NJ, 9200 Atlantic Ave.

The record: built 1881 by James V. Lafferty, a Philadelphia developer, to promote real-estate sales. National Historic Landmark, 1976. Oldest surviving roadside attraction in the US.

Second look: she was never a monument. She was an ad. Lafferty hauled buyers up into the howdah to look down at the lots he wanted to move. He patented the "animal-shaped building" on Dec 5, 1882, a year after she was already standing. First name: Elephant Bazaar. Named Lucy in 1902, twenty-one years late, reportedly by a daughter-in-law. Only male Asian elephants carry tusks; she has them.

1970: saved door-to-door, moved ~100 yards in seven hours, then closed four years. A plug of green glass went into the howdah floor to refract daylight inside her. The current tin skin is a $2.4M replacement, finished 2022.

From the street, heading east off Atlantic Ave, you mostly see her back over a parking-lot wall, one red panel out, a power line crossing her.
