The OP_RETURN change was just a final straw for many people with Core - it’s not actually about OP_RETURN. Core has ignored the onslaught of ordinals spam for years. I like most of the Core devs I’ve met, and I don’t like Luke’s views in general. But I’m sick of Core ignoring and enabling spam. Because of Libre Relay and Slipstream, it seems to me that gradual periodic consensus restrictions via soft fork is the only way to get Bitcoin back to being money because node filters are insufficient these days. I don’t know if you’ve noticed it but most of the Bitcoin influencers are captured by David Bailey and his spam empire because they want to be invited back to speak at the massive Bitcoin conference each year. I think there’s a multi-faceted attack on Bitcoin right now from people who want to make money in the short-term and don’t care about the long-term success of Bitcoin, or do care about the long-term success but don’t think adversarially enough.
