yep, I get that. My question is why does it switch between 36 and 18 months?

I would understand if the paragraph said "we will need another 185 trillion in the next 18 months and another 370 eighteen months after that. For some reason it's 36 months for the next 185 trillion.

Good question. It doesn’t have to be exactly 2^x. It can be e.g. 4^x or (2^2x). So the exponential curve moves faster than 2^x. The main point I think Jeff is making is that it moves faster and faster, and most people dont think in these terms.
