The story of Henry Nowak seems to have gone global.
It happened in #Southampton, the next city along from me. Normally there's a great deal of stick between inhabitants of the two southern cities.
Right now I'm wondering how my neighbours are doing, knowing this happened on their patch. How it could have been any of them. I feel bad for them.
In recent weeks a random attack saw police kicking a man in the head several times, because he was armed and was trying to kill people. They were criticised, but most sensible people figured, well, you've got to disarm or disable him somehow.
A pair of brothers who attacked police at Manchester airport were told they no longer faced trial over the events. People rightly expected the police to exercise a little force in that situation too and are shocked the brothers have effectively gotten away with attacking the cops.
Yet in the case of Henry Nowak, they got it oh so very very wrong.
He wasn't attacking anyone. He wasn't aggressive. He was prone, slowly bleeding to death. Yet, he was dragged along gravel and shackled in handcuffs, left to drown in his own blood.
Unless they deal with these officers effectively and quickly, they will erode more public support, still reeling in recent years following 2020.
One has already resigned.
It's not enough.
They must be held to a higher standard than the rest of us, because they are entrusted with power.
The next day or two will be interesting.
