The whole point of Bitcoin is self-custody

being able to hold your own keys

then send and receive transactions to/from anyone you want, without asking for permission

Ironically and definitely intentionally, self-custody is also limited technically and discouraged socially

Now we deal with custodians (aka banks) as if the system was designed to lead us down this path

Custodians and KYC/AML laws are easily the two biggest threats to a Bitcoin economy. Both should be avoided like the plague.

The ability for a few to opt out fully: self custody and transact is the key. The % who do will always be small. The absolute number is growing and tools are much better now (me 6 years in)
