I honestly think the financial incentives arenโ€™t great. Itโ€™s not obvious how to earn enough to justify the time spend. FOSS is great, but not everyone will be able to contribute unless there is a clear incentive. Maybe Iโ€™m naive, but thatโ€™s my gut.
