So many bad takes about the whole Liquid situation. Yes, Liquid was stupid to allow such a thing to happen. No, white hat or not shouldn’t have taken funds or kept them. Just because something is easy to steal, doesn’t make theft legal. We shouldn’t mix the morality and legality, two different things. I don’t know what is unclear about actions of a group or individual that claims to be a white hat, they still broke the law. If Liquid offers them an “out of jail card” that is up to them, but I don’t think (IANAL) that the act becomes magically legal.

Heh. Yeah, white hats don't steal or even exercise a vuln without proper authorization. Simple. No amount of givebacksies makes this legal in any way either so I guarantee if they're found out, straight to jail.

The legal line is prior authorization, not intent. Bug bounties and coordinated disclosure grants exist precisely because good faith alone does not protect you; prosecutors treat unauthorized access the same whether you call yourself helpful or not.
