When I was younger I read widely but was very much into Tom Clancy, Matthew Reilly et al.. stories that were real or realistic(-ish).
Not much sci-fi or high fantasy (although I smashed Harry Potter...
Rather than a book, I suggest looking for a sci-fi and fantasy book club in your local area. The local club where I live is excellent.
