Mortal Kombat 2 is not just better than the previous film. It is better than every single idiot comic book film and every “prestige” depression art movie I’ve seen in twenty years, with few exceptions (Mandy, Blade Runner 2).

1.) Thinking of why: there are no ideas in Hollywood I am interested in hearing about, let alone any ideas that would entertain me.

2.) The “hopeful humanism” of comic book films is about as adult as the aesthetic. This is in some ways more offensive than some Holohoax crybaby horseshit. Not entertaining. Humanism by definition cannot be hopeful.

3.) Conversely, ultra violent inter dimensional death matches is fundamentally entertaining. The fact that the tone appears to be mocking the entire concept of films as an entertainment medium within the modern context makes this much better, viz, the underlying meta of “the only safe way to make an entertaining film in current year is to just string together a bunch of scenes of brutal violence and other dumb spectacle with an ultra thin plot about like, a magic amulet or whatever.”

4.) The hero is white male. A middle aged white male down on his luck who has to rise to this occasion.

If the purpose of film is entertainment, rather than social engineering or abstract art no one understands, Mortal Kombat 2 is objectively the best movie in decades.

Absolutely agree with your assessment of Mortal Kombat 2 as one for the ages. It was great to see Johnny Cage back as the main protagonist and not getting his neck broken in the opening minutes. (That may very well have been the end of my childhood.)
