Yes, I was talking about ZK proofs. That's the only way I see being able to please those complaining about on-chain traces forever.
Either that or we go back to the mess of trusting that zaps happened, like you described. Which is a massive problem today since it is quite easy to fake a zap and most clients offer Zap counts as a way to give reputation to a post in the feed.
