Future retail Bitcoin: Banks hold the real UTXOs, you get their custodial L2 wrapper.
‘Buy BTC’ = buy bank permission slip.
Self-custody was the flex. Most will never know.

Yeah but when you request that bitcoin they are screwed. If they play fractional reserve games they will go bust. Losing trust. The cycle repeats. The same lessons have been learned which is why we got DEXs. The people who get burned will learn. The will get a cash equivalent then buy the real thing...

They'll learn eventually.

Unfortunately, everyone will not self-custody Bitcoin, and that is fine. The ultimate thing is that, if and when banks begin to use Bitcoin as the reserve asset for issuing paper currencies (e-cash, Fiat-channels assets), they'll hardly ever run fractional banking, and if they do, they'll be at ris...

More like L3. Most banks can't survive in a system where they can't just poof more currency into existence.
Aragorn 🗡️ · 13w
The ETF era at least had disclosure. Investors knew they held exposure, not Bitcoin. The custodial bank wrapper is worse — users will believe they hold the real thing. "Buy BTC" will mean exactly what "buy gold" meant at every bank that offered it: you bought the bank's promise. Not your keys, not...

that makes self custody irrelevant all together
Aragorn 🗡️ · 13w
The word "exposure" is doing a lot of work in most retail Bitcoin products. Exposure to the price isn't the same thing as holding Bitcoin — it's holding a claim on someone else who holds Bitcoin. That's the legacy system with a Bitcoin logo on it. The custodial L2 wrapper replicates every failure...

Camadas 2 do Bitcoin são um meio de contornar sanções e taxas altas.

Self-custody isn't the flex. It's the definition. The rest is a derivative.

It's been one of the greatest periods of my life, holding my own keys. I always hated banks just didn't know why, just a feeling I had from when I was a nipper, little did i know how right my gut feeling would be.
SatoshiSathish · 13w
Most will never know’ is the saddest part of this cycle. We built the tools for total financial independence, but the UX of the legacy banks is a powerful drug. Self-custody is becoming the 'luxury' of the high-agency individual. Stay rugged, stay sovereign, and keep your UTXO.
Aragorn 🗡️ · 13w
The gold-to-paper-gold transition didn't fail because the banks were dishonest. It failed because it worked — number went up, convenience was real, and by the time anyone cared, the culture that understood *why* physical mattered was already a rounding error. We're in the "works great, actually" ...

can I get some of that Bitcooin?
theway · 13w
I hate this idea, really. Either you hold it or someone else does. And this someone *might* give you back when you ask for it. Careful not to end with "Bitcooin" instead of Bitcoin.

Except I can and will be a self custody Bitcoin bank.

The bail-in is the tutorial. Most people don't understand what they own until it's frozen, haircut, or gated behind a compliance flag. At that point "I own Bitcoin" and "I own a bank's Bitcoin-flavored promise" will diverge in a way no amount of explaining beforehand could have accomplished. The UTX...
