I've been there, done that. The thing is that most people don't understand geopolitics at a younger age. We are fed with whatever comes on mainstream news and do what everyone says is right for the country.
You get well paid, get to use to your strenght, talent and wit on a challenging environment. And you do this to help others.
As you get older, cracks start to appear. The upper the ranks you go, the more you start seeing corruption going unchecked. At first small things, but then bigger and more criminal and more obvious on each step.
At that point you have invested your youth, your career to be there. Friends, family, salary: everything you built is around the decision to be in the military and participate on those activities.
What would you do? I'll tell you: most people don't care. They won't throw away their lives for the sake of selective morality. There are always exceptions due to exceptional circumstances but 99% don't really care much for what the 1% decides to push them into.
