They don't want devs having any personal control of the language, macros make code hard to assembly-line, and the many ways of solving problems in a good high-level language means the devs aren't fungible. Corpos want to slot in "a Java dev" and know what their output will be, for planning, then fire them in 10 years and get a new one who's exactly the same.
