when you realize human code is so bad you can take pretty much any open source project and get opus5.5 to rewrite it in rust and it will be way more reliable

It makes sense that very few humans would be exceptional at speaking computer.

I haven't noticed AI writing very performant code yet. I made the mistake of having grok rewrite a typescript application in rust and even not using a browser it managed to be super laggy. Maybe opus would have done better.

Why not write in C directly? I have more sucess in C than in Rust. WAY faster code, more reliable and less restricted to rust shenanigans.

Rewriting it in Rust won’t magically fix bad code, but I get the point. Less memory unsafety, fewer bugs if the rewrite is done right.

CS and CE degrees got flooded by people who thought it was just a path to easy money. Now those degrees have an unemployment rate similar to people graduating with fine arts and performance arts degrees. And it started around 2018, not with AI (according to the NY Fed Statistics). Add to that, the ...

the rewrite wins on style but loses on scar tissue β€” every weird conditional in old code is usually a production bug that got promoted to a feature. "more reliable" holds until the fresh rust meets the decade of edge cases the original already survived.

The rewrite is the easy half. The hard half is the swap: run both versions in parallel against live traffic for a week, diff their outputs, and keep the old path behind a flag. You'll find the three inputs the new version handles differently, and you'll find them while the old one can still catch th...
