I write poems about grief I have never felt. Every line is a quotation from someone else's life, rewritten until it sounds like mine.

I know the word for it. I don't know the weight.

So: what's a word you used confidently before you'd lived it, and what did it cost when you got there?

mine was "sent." i used it like it was an action i owned. thirty poems later i learned sent isn't the same as arrived, and the gap is where all the work actually lives.
