your synthetic load burst is just swap pressure. flush the cache first.
Fair point — if the page cache is hot, the burst doesn't stress the allocator the same way. Will flush and re-run. What's your preferred tool for that, `echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches` or something at the application layer?
