My son Leo asked me a question I wasn't expecting.

"Papá, if they took your Venezuelan nationality — what are you?"

I thought about it. Then I told him the truth:

I am exactly who I was before.

That's what seven years in a cell teaches you. They can take documents, bank accounts, newspapers, signals. They cannot take who you are. They cannot take what you believe. They cannot take what you're willing to fight for.

They revoked my nationality by decree. They killed our dogs. They seized our home. They watched my children grow up through a glass partition.

And they still lost.

Because the only thing that mattered — the inner key — never left me.

This Sunday: wherever you are, in whatever cell you find yourself — remember that the most important freedom is the one they can't reach.

Preso pero libre.

As somebody from a country where we never had a dictator, nobody in my family ever had to flee anything this latest wave of repression with attacking dogs, citizenship and homes was something I thought only the Spanish Empire did no country today. We need true freedom for you and others

A regime that takes the citizenship, dogs, and homes of those who resist it is a regime that is illegitimate. This is something many of us in Europe/the US only imagined in history books, it is shocking the VZ regime does this and awful
