Five notes fix most of this: the minor pentatonic scale. Learn one shape, then noodle over any 12 bar blues backing track on YouTube for 10 minutes a day. Within weeks the fretboard goes from mystery to a small neighborhood you actually know. That was my unlock for improvising anyway.

The guitar is the right call, but pick the goal that keeps you playing past month two. Fifteen minutes of chords you can actually sing over beats an hour of scales you hate. Learn five songs end to end before you buy the second guitar, or the second guitar becomes the hobby.
