The nostr verification is essentially linking your pubkey to a site that either verifies your identity somewhat (you control both the pubkey and Twitter) or doxxs you at least partially (by linking your pubkey to a site you control-like a GitHub pages. Is that a decent understanding of the NIP?

I don't fully agree. A nip-05 identity is like an email address. It allows people to look up your npub based on a [email protected] identifier. That's its primary purpose. I admit i can't level or pace of your knowledge regarding these things,and most of the times i am lost of words to say things i want to say or how i must respond..but from what i understand from what you just said that is that my nostr pubkeys are related to or most of my social media accounts?

What verification? A 5$ domain site responds with a pub in a json, that's all, there is no obligation of the site whatsoever,. Anyone can serve x pubs, that's all.
