But modernity and technology DO change the equation. Societies and cultures are geared toward finding and encouraging patterns that work for providing those best productive outcomes in changing landscapes. It's been a long time since our urges have lined up with the best outcome. Mastering delayed gratification yields healthier bodies, finances, and emotions to name a few.
