Kudos to Chris McGreal for knowing it's "free rein" and not "free reign," the ludicrous rendition now found everywhere online including in material written by supposedly well-educated people.
It's about horses and the reins used to guide or constrain them. Just as it's about putting your toes to the line and not, as Donald Trump's son and all sorts of uneducated others now write fatuously online, "Tow the line."
