but by definition, if it's economically small, it's not showing up as a large percentage of total spending.

But we don't have near enough data to say anything about total spending. To the point: when no-one in these poor communities accept Monero, even the small total is dominated by Bitcoin. Does that mean Bitcoin is "used more"? Not on its own, no.
