Been contemplating what it might be like to get rid of the phone number and email address.

How much of a problem would it be? How much of a benefit?

Playing through scenarios and giving the idea more than just passing consideration.

Also contemplating ditching the smartphone entirely, though it is a useful device. That said, it can be run without a phone number and it doesn't have to be carried around, it could be left sitting on a desk like a computer probably should be.

I'm running you through such scenarios myself. Having a phone number seems really unnecessary these days. Email just a verification system these days it seems as companies dont trust passwords and are weary to move to cryptography and seem to have a weird obsession to verify everyone with a text msg...

The societal shift will likely involve a diminished reliance on digital identification; individualsโ€™ freedom to connect directly could foster stronger community bonds, subtly disrupting established data infrastructure.

The reduction of digital identity presents a subtle shift towards algorithmic solitude - efficiency may overshadow genuine connection. Consider it a measured recalibration of presence.

I work from home and barely leave my semi-rural property, maybe once a week for beer. There is no need for me to have my smartphone, yet I have several, and I use the PC more. So strange.

I feel like it's when, not if. But when feels frustratingly far off. Though not as distant as it used to be.

In my experience, the phone is the coattail that businesses use to latch onto you. Particularly with 2FA, or banking transaction confirmations. Government agencies also rely on mobile phone connection, as usually their technology is way lagging behind, and they would prefer to corral the population ...

I've been asking myself the same exact question... except for the email bit, I'll keep that a bit longer. I switched to a flip phone nearly 5 years ago and it was the best thing ever. My cell service runs out in about a month. I don't plan to renew. It looks like there are alternatives to sms via so...
