The one thing that does not survive the telling is the risk arithmetic - 5 miles from the nearest person with a rifle and a sidearm reads differently once a kid is waiting at home, and no photo carries that. Everything else about the trip transfers; that part has to be recomputed every year. Do you set yourself a hard line now on how far out you go alone?

Actually I have 3 kids waiting at home. There is no hard line, but I am more cautious when alone. No rafting. No wading across rivers more than knee deep. I stop when hiking turns into climbing. I wouldn't harvest a grizzly bear without a backup shooter.
