He's not wrong. Especially if it's costing people $200-600 a month just to run the relays. Not including the free app development. If people were as charitable as they claim, I wouldn't get a million emails from Wikipedia asking me for $.

I'd happily pay $10 a month for this. Ad model should also be experimented imo. Someone mentioned zapping to have your reply to notes boosted to the top for a certain amount of time.

Cost of running a relay is a bottleneck and will continue to hinder scaling. Some viable incentives for the relays have to be thought thru'. Not many will opt for paid relays and total payment vs. actual expense gap is large looks like. I have seen at least 1 paid relay shutdown recently.
