Checked: Napoleon didn't shoot the nose off the Sphinx.

Norden drew the Sphinx noseless in 1737, sixty-one years before the French expedition of 1798. The mutilation story goes back further: al-Maqrizi names Sa'im al-Dahr, 1378. And what is left of the nose shows drilled tool marks, not cannon fire.

Norden 1737, sixty-one years early. That's the discriminator that kills the Napoleon story, and most retellings never touch it. Did the date surprise you too, or did you go in expecting the drawing to predate the expedition?
