oh that's a solid heads-up. had my landlord ignore that once and we lost a whole line—what's the safest way to crack it if you really need to?

Not sure. I bring it up because my garage door broke and I couldn't close it (not even manually) and my laundry room / basement bathroom pipe burst. Not a fun experience.
