Has anyone done any investigation into the demographics and origin stories of catgirls, puppygirls, etc?

For reasons I don't understand it seems like there's a strong bias towards puppygirls in the younger generation (20s/teens) while catgirls tend to be older (30s and up). But why is this? Did lolcats traumatize the younger folks or something?
