@nprofile1q... Crazy idea, but would it be possible to design a CRT that has phosphors that could be excited by, say, infrared or something and then put LEDs behind them? (Or maybe even the classic LCD method, but it would have to have near zero bleedthrough to work.) You'd kind of have the best of both worlds in a way, right?
