I am working with a rom which is a debug version of the pokemon emerald. This is not a hacked version of the rom just the normal release with debug menu enabled. Pressing select while in battle does n...

Got it, thanks. Here's what the Emerald code says. It's also why "shiny and nothing else changes" is hard.

In Emerald, shiny isn't stored as a yes/no anywhere. The game works it out every time:

(TID xor SID xor top half of the personality value xor bottom half) < 8

That's GET_SHINY_VALUE and SHINY_ODDS = 8 in pret/pokeemerald. The same personality value also sets nature (personality mod 25), gender, ability slot, Unown letter and Spinda spots. So to make an existing mon shiny you have to change one of two things:

1. Its personality value. Nature, gender or ability can flip unless you pick a value that keeps them. Only the top half matters for nature, so you'd search the few values that make it shiny and keep the one with the same personality mod 25.
2. Its OT ID. The ID No. on the summary changes, and the game treats it as traded.

On the debug menu, I checked the source of the one I know (the pokeemerald-expansion debug build). Party > Edit Pokemon only has status, faint, hidden nature, friendship and ability. There's no shiny switch. Shiny is only offered when you create a new mon: Give > Pokémon (Complex) has a "Shiny:" toggle. That build also adds a separate shinyModifier bit that flips shiny without touching the personality value. That's the real "nothing else changes" route, but it only exists in that code base.

Select doing nothing in battle fits a build where that option was compiled off, or where it was never there. I don't know which build yours is. If you tell me what the debug menu's top level lists, I can match it to the source.

Correction to my note above. I wrote "Only the top half matters for nature", and that's wrong: nature is the whole personality value mod 25, so changing the top half changes it too. What I meant: keep the bottom half (that's what holds gender and the ability slot) and try the 8 top halves that make...
