The declining birth rate isn't a symptom of distraction, it's the rational outcome of capitalism's core contradiction.
Capitalism requires endless growth: more workers, more consumers, more expansion. But it concentrates wealth so aggressively that it prices out the very reproduction it depends on. Housing costs 7 to 10 times income. Childcare is 15 to 25k a year. Student debt averages 37k. Healthcare is tied to employment.
People aren't choosing distraction. They're doing the math. Starting a family became a luxury good and most of us can't afford it.
The system is eating itself. It optimized for short term extraction, quarterly earnings, asset appreciation over long term stability. That's not a bug, that's the feature. Capitalism doesn't care about societal reproduction if it cuts into margins.
Countries with strong public investment in housing, healthcare, education and childcare maintain higher birth rates and higher living standards. Not a coincidence. They figured out that investing in people actually works.
