This is a thought that has gone through my head before. But it was fascinating to have two popular shows have the same theme at the same time. I’ve read/watched a lot of scifi and never really seen this precise idea. It’s maybe adjacent to Dr. Strangelove, but that was an insane person who triggered it, the elite were trying to stop it. Probably the closest is the PKD novel The Penultimate Truth, but it’s a bit different. It seems like a kind of obvious speculative fiction concept, so it’s strange it hadn’t been explored further and then all at once is on two popular shows.
