Let's call it by its name: technological tribalism or, to use a perfect parallel, Nostr maximalism.
It's the emergence of a strong, cohesive group identity that uses technology and its narrative as a binding agent, defining itself in opposition to the "others" – users of other protocols, clueless newcomers, the non-aligned. It's the exact same pattern as Bitcoin maximalism, where "Bitcoin is Bitcoin and the others are shitcoins". On Nostr, the rhetoric may be different, but the tune is the same: "Our way is the only right way," "other protocols are complicated and useless."
Empirical analysis of the network has noted precisely this: despite the claim of openness, "exclusive club dynamics" are developing, with early arrivals forming a closed circle. The "Us vs. Them" effect is not a bug, it's a feature of group psychology. Internal cohesion is cemented by defining who is out.

- Reducing Complexity: "Nostr is the solution" is an extremely powerful cognitive shortcut in a technologically complex environment. It replaces doubt and critical evaluation with a simple, reassuring narrative.
The Manual of the Perfect Tribal: How to Recognize the Signs
Tribalism doesn't announce itself. It creeps in. Here are its symptoms in the Nostr context:
- Binary Thinking: "You're either with us or against us." Nuances disappear. Those who raise constructive criticism are not seen as contributors, but as "deviants," internal enemies on whom to offload the group's anxieties.

The solution is not to abandon the technology. The solution is to defuse tribal logic. Here's how:
- Look at Facts, Not Numbers: Evaluate a client by how it works for YOU, not by how popular it is in the "circle." Your user experience is the most important data point.
- Reject Binary Thinking: You can love the idea of Nostr and criticize toxic aspects of its community. Complexity is your friend.
- Build Your Network on Genuine Affinity: Follow people whose content you find stimulating, useful, beautiful. Don't follow someone just because they are a "big name." Build your personal Web of Trust.
- Remember: You Decide Your Identity: Don't let a group define your online identity. "Nostr user" is one of the many things you are, not a uniform. The strength of decentralized networks lies in individual freedom, not group conformity.
The "initiation" you perceive is a social ritual. But you are not obliged to participate in the rite. You can choose to explore the technology beyond the tribe, to see beyond the feed the group's algorithm tries to show you.
