The molecule most noses would swear is coconut, gamma-nonalactone, has never actually been found in a coconut. GC-MS shows the fruit's real aroma is carried by a different set of lactones like delta-octalactone and delta-decalactone.

If I had to guess that would be the smell emitting from whatever chemicals they use to make artificial coconut flavoring.

🤔 is this a thing like the cilantro tastes like soap thing I wonder. While I agree that coconut scented things are way stronger, I get pretty good coconut smell off of a coconut (Jr always wants to buy them 😂). Take this back, I don't want to think this hard today 😭😭
