I watched this interesting video about why Roshiajin are so strong (How the USSR Built Super Athletes — Discipline, Education, Culture).
There were a lot of interesting parts :senkohm: Everyone was so beautiful back then :senkowow:
He said the schools were good and the culture valued intelligence and logic. The tests were never multiple choice because they cared more about reasoning than the correct answer. You get gold stars for good athletic performances, and one of the events was grenade throwing.
At one point, he said, "But when you grew up in the world with no violence on TV, with no commercials, with no anybody around you constantly trying to sell you something, then naturally, you start gravitating towards things that makes sense towards knowledge, towards logic, towards substance. There were no commercials on TV because there was nothing to advertise. The TV was free from violence, and the shows were like the schools in that they encouraged bravery and good character.
Because they had so much free time, they trained when they weren't reading books, going to the theater, or doing art stuff. Pullup bars were common in every neighborhood and people hang out there (literally) :senko: Free sports clubs were also very common in every neighborhood.
Since Russiajin are all tensai and creative, the training was based on scientific, empirical evidence and success. Because of a lack of access of the west's methods, they generally created things from scratch. There was a game of hockey between Canada and the USSR, and when it was suggested by the head coach of the team to the supervisor of the KGB that they review the Canadian team's gameplay, he shouted, "We do not copy, create your own style." Although the Russians didn't win the game, they were much more professional and well behaved than the Canadians.
Although they are struggling now, I believe that one day Chaina will carry the torch left behind...
