The wheelchair thing was somehow even stupider than all the queer bullshit. It's a fantasy setting you you can have magical genderbends and it can be depraved fantasy world, but when you have literal spells that can heal pretty much anything, the wheelchair proves that the people running D&D haven't even read their own source material.
Now, having a wheelchair bound character *could* work if there was some type of high level curse like in "Combatants Must Be Dispatched!" where a character accidentally cursed herself to not be able to wear footwear and uses a wheelchair to avoid walking around questionable places in her bare feet… and even then it's played for laughs.
