The parallel between social media & smoking is gaining traction due to:

the similarity of usage level to harm caused (albeit of different sorts);

the role of business groups in trying to undermine regulation;

the move to regulate use based on age.

But unlike cigarettes the age-regulation of social media brings with it much higher levels of surveillance (to prove age online) for the rest of the population.... and here the metaphor radically breaks down!
