Anybody can fork Bitcoin. That's how this has always worked. There are hundreds of forks of Bitcoin and forks of forks of Bitcoin and so on.
Dogecoin is a fork that was literally started as a joke. The guy thought it would be hilarious to make it ridiculously inflationary. It has an $11 billion market cap now.
The rhetoric from the bip110 stalwarts has gotten outrageous. They think by forking and changing the PoW they are 'firing' the miners. I agree with them that Bitcoin is corrupt, it has been for a long time. Nothing they are doing however is going to erase it.
I wish them luck with their fork. I might even use it depending on how it turns out. I can't be counted among them anymore at this point. We took a stand and made our point. Bitcoin is going to keep going in the direction it's been headed. I don't think it's good, but it is what it is.
