When "Hi-Fi" VCRs came to market they were great for making primary recordings of live concerts. The digital tape had lower noise and a higher dynamic range than audio cassette tape (recorders).

With one caveat. You needed to play the tape back on the original VCR it was recorded on to maintain the proper tape alignment with the head in azimuth.

Transfer them to audio cassette or better yet Reel To Reel, use the VCR tape as the master.

They were basically a DAT recorder before there were DAT recorders.
