And you don't really need to worry about either of those when you aren't doing something low level or specialized. You can replace atomic operations with mutexes in threading and get away with it mostly fine. And cache alignment, who cares when you aren't doing high performance stuff on modern computers.

It's similar to when you ask 5 different people what the "volatile" keyword means and you get 5 different answers.
