BIP 110 was attempting to temporarily restrict the amount and the type of data that could be included in a transaction, until more permanent solutions could be developed. Opponents didn't think that was needed.

Bitcoin Core raised the OP_RETURN limit. Luke did not like that, claimed it would put spam on the blockchain. Luke then called everyone who did not run Knots pedofiles. People don't like Luke.

It's was framed as Big Bitcoin vs. Grassroots plebs so that was most of the conflict. It goes back to the belief that core betrayed the main purpose of bitcoin relaxing the rules.
