I always wonder if these things come from the “inside” to control what software users run. Pushing older phones to run newer software with a bigger load would be a dirty way to get people feening the latest “upgrade”.

Good reminder. Mobile security is supply-chain security now. Fast patching matters, but so do fewer opaque dependencies and better user control over what can run.
