In 2020, Bitcoin’s source-code repository was included in GitHub’s Arctic Code Vault project.
GitHub took a snapshot of the active public Bitcoin and other important open-source project repositories, recorded 21 terabytes of data on 186 reels of archival film, and transported the collection to Svalbard, Norway.
It was deposited on July 8 in a decommissioned coal mine beneath the permafrost.
The storage project was designed with a thousand-year preservation goal.
What went into the mine was Bitcoin’s software source code, not everyone’s bitcoin, and not their private keys. #Bitcoin joined a physical archive that also included Linux and Python.
