I've been monitoring the Lasius emarginatus colonies in the south Bronx with some care. I knew of four colonies near my place. One was at least 5 years old. The other three I didn't know the age but they were big enough to be at least 2 years old.
But, here is the thing: All but one of them are gone now. The two in the park? Gone. The one near my building? gone.
Only the one living near the courthouse remains.
Not enough to call a trend, but they seem to have struggled with the heat.
