I would say follow packs are one of the best to get started (available on Ditto, Primal & I think Amethyst). Another good way is just finding people in comments & following them, if they post stuff you dont like you can always unfollow. You could follow me for starters too

To be honest i used web of trust relays and used the worldwide feed to find interesting people. You can follow hashtags in many clients. ANd: Use a relay like sendit.noslfare.com to send your notes to many relays for distribution.
