Over the last 2 years I've bought over 1300 DVDs (and blue rays) and over 600 CD's.
I've also got loads of retro games (from atari 2600 up to ps4) on cartridge and CD.

I want to own my own medi., I've seen too many examples of things being edited, censored or banned, and I want to have the original.

Plus, I don't have to deal with adverts, reduced quality, lack of internet or monthly charges. Most of the films and music I got came from charity shops for virtually free (some shops do 5 or 10 dvds for the equivalent of $1.

Most people think I'm insane :) but they can go do face scans to listen to their favorite metal album on Spotify, I'll carry on doing my thing :)

I recently also started downloading music again. That can be easily done with a Youtube to mp3 converter.

Not bad but I prefer my system. 4x 16Tb HDD connected to a rpi downloading from various private BitTorrent trackers and this being shared without limit through aMule/eMule for those who can't access those private trackers. When I am away from home I access all this content using Jellyfin and also gi...

I totally agree and it's the best time to get DVD/BR and CD, they are mostly free or super cheap if you take the time to look for it. However video games are super expensive, at least everything Nintendo is overpriced as fuck. Thus what is the right price to really own something today? I'm sure ther...

physical mediums do have a limited lifespan if it's not engraved in metal or magnetic tape.

Besides our regular free podcast feed we started to produce one episode per year exclusively on a limited run of compact cassettes. We call this the "Podcassette". 😁 Our supporters will get a real physical medium and we think this is way more valuable then simply putting information behind a pay ...

I haven't really bought any music, digital or physical, in about ten years or so. The convenience of streaming took over. But, in recent times, I've started to think about this from a few different angles. In previous years, when I bought a new album (CD or vinyl), the album felt important to actua...

I can hardly wait till streaming in NOSTR becomes the norm. Sats zapped directly to artists per play.

I ripped all my DVDs onto Jellyfin (Raspberry Pi 4, 8GB with a 2TB SSD). Works like a charm, plus set up for external access, so can watch for a few hours in the car park whilst my wife is shopping! πŸ™‚

I think this is the same reason as to why I am so attracted to books of black and white photographs.

Mindful consumption. I prefer this.

I completely understand you! Owning your favorite media personally can be very satisfying, with no updates, no ads, and no streaming nonsense. I do the same thing during my breaks. I have a lot of CDs on my new Catamaran flybridge yacht https://www.yachttrading.com/new-yachts-for-sale/yacht-type-cat...

Buying physical medium and digitizing is good. It bothers me that much of my large book collection and movies and TV shows I have bough are on streaming services. If I stop paying every month and how ever much they decide they want now then I lose what I have "bought". Since I bought I feel no re...
