Dr. Kent Carpenter, a 73‑year‑old American marine biologist, spent more than 50 years studying the fish, reefs, and marine biodiversity of the Philippines.

His mapping of 2,983 shore‑fish species helped identify the central Philippines and the Verde Island Passage as the “center of the center” of marine shore‑fish biodiversity.

On July 12, he was shot dead inside his home in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, during a reported home invasion.

Authorities have formed a special investigation task group and are still pursuing leads in the case.
