This is one reason why associating phone numbers with accounts in encrypted chat apps is bad practice. Looking at you Signal, Quicksy, and to a lesser extent Wire (supplying a phone numbers is at least optional, but still not wise).

As this WhatSapp leak demonstrates, phone numbers associated with accounts are *metadata*. So until such time as Signal stops collecting them, anyone who claims that it doesn't leak metadata is just plain wrong.
